Several methodologies and frameworks are employed in software development for various purposes. The two most common are the modern Agile, and the more traditional Waterfall methods. While both have their pros and cons that need to be weighed for your specific purposes, this webinar argues that a hybrid model combining both methods offers several benefits for some development teams.
The Waterfall method is a sequential software design process in which work is progressing along the phases of a predefined process. Once the first step (e.g. planning, defining requirements) is done, the team moves over to the second phase (e.g. execution, designing the product). This method is suited for long delivery cycles, and is considered beneficial when building complex structures and when complying with regulations is a requirement.
Agile is a fairly modern approach that ensures continuous delivery: it means iterative and incremental processes and relies heavily on customer feedback. It’s considered to have benefits in shortening the duration of product development. There are various methods to implement the Agile framework, the most popular of them being Scrum. Development in Scrum is done in shorter cycles (usually lasting from one week to about a month) called sprints, at the end of which a retrospective meeting helps review the progress made.
Naturally, both methods have their pros, cons and challenges for various purposes: Waterfall projects tend to be more accountable and transparent, providing clarity for users by helping them overview structures and hierarchies better. Agile speeds up the development process (rapid delivery), and ensures flexibility in responding to changes in the requirements. So is it possible to combine the pros of both approaches?
