blog-140704-industry-4-0-336x336 Industry 4.0 - Automation, Electronics Governed by Software Is the Future Set for ALM Solutions? alm The new buzzword for industry in Germany is Industry 4.0. This term is used for Germany’s high tech strategy, subtitled “the success of the German economic performance”. Deutsche Bank recently published a research report with the title “Upgrading Germany’s industrial capabilities on the horizon”. The report begins with the fact that Germany has been and will remain the leading industrial player in Europe, producing one-third of the EU’s added value.

The research makes it clear that Industry 4.0 covers all areas of IT related technology revolution including Big data, Internet of Things, M2M communication and Smart Concepts (cities, logistics, manufacturing etc). But what does Industry 4.0 actually mean? Well, Industry 4.0 is about boosting efficiency by integrated electronic intelligence (automation) into increasing numbers of systems, with the end goal of increased cost efficient operation. It covers all areas of industry where automation technologies are integrated including automotive, high tech, transport and logistics, electronics and medical.

Since automation is strongly based on software components, the question arises: how does Industry 4.0 impact the software industry? What kind of new requirements can be defined for smart manufacturing in terms of software quality, accuracy and safety?

We all know that the complexity of industrial products is growing, and the software part is becoming even more important. Industry 4.0 is all about automation, which means embedded software enabling hardware to be more intelligent, self governed, autonomous and connected. However imprecise the definition of Industry 4.0 as a term still is, it definitely refers to highly automated devices.

How does Industry 4.0 impact the ALM industry?

Industry 4.0 is the next revolution, the fourth revolution. Software embedded into industrial products determines the path to the future with a focus on accuracy, safety and high quality of applications. In complex systems, only professional application lifecycle management can ensure the required level of quality and functional safety. Industry 4.0 strengthens the need for ALM tools as industry players realize the need for complete traceability along the development lifecycle from requirements until release.

Industry 4.0 is a buzzword, but it is also a government strategy with real meaning, as a technology based revolution across many industries. This strategy also confirms the importance of ALM Software for all embedded software development teams working on software where quality and safety are the most important factors.

Intland’s codeBeamer ALM tool is a complex platform that provides full traceability for application development, supporting automation and efficiency goals of smart manufacturing. Request evaluation access to find out more about the benefits of using codeBeamer.
