Agile-and-Project-Management-Office-PMO-336x336 The Change Management Role of the PMO in Large Enterprise agile The role of the PMO (Project Management Office) is responsible for enterprise program and portfolio cost management, and training related to project management. It is for this reason that the PMO is vital for change management and facilitating Agile adoption throughout the enterprise. Historically the PMO has taken a Waterfall style approach to project management, a process driven, inflexible planning and delivery approach. Even today, less than half of all projects have any Agile methods associated with their delivery, despite the overwhelming evidence of the benefits of Agile.

Back in 2011 PMI /Forrester did a survey that revealed that only one quarter of PMO’s preferred Agile methodology over what was referred to as the „Project Management Body of Knowledge”. More recently in ESI’s global PMO study from 2013 suggests that only 42% of projects have any Agile Methodology associated with them. Since then an ongoing trend of Agile Adoption has been witnessed often through the adoption of Hybrid Agile methods. This is reflected by the growth (8%) in uptake of Agile Project Management Solutions (ALM Software) especially for those built for enterprise use.

Another good indication of growth is the increasing uptake of higher level Agile project management training and certifications. According to PMI their PMI-ACP Management certification has been a huge success since its launch in 2011, with over 2000 certified by the beginning of 2013.

The PMO plays an important role in Agile Project Management, responsible for both budget and training. The growing awareness that most projects benefit from some element of Agile Methodology is fueling the demand for certification and increasing the need for collaboration across the enterprise. That being said the figures mentioned above show a big shortfall in qualified personnel with demand far outstripping supply.
