intland-software-kanban-board-168x111 Kanban Board: Good or Bad for Agile Creativity and Efficiency agile Agile is all about “Individuals and interactions over processes and tools” just as the Agile Manifesto describes. We believe it is important to give creative people Autonomy-Mastery-Purpose as was described by Daniel Pink.

Teams often see Kanban board (Agile Planning board) as a “necessary evil”. They consider it as an administration tool instead of “an opportunity” to see what others do and contribute. Before Web 2.0 teams often used a simple white board to collect new ideas. The white board symbolized brainstorming and freedom to share ideas to create something new, something extraordinary.

Imagine Kanban board as the virtualization of the white board. It is more than just “drag-and-drop”, story points and users stories. If teams are encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas as well as to provide constructive criticism and feedback on tasks, then the Kanban board can easily become “an engine” that assists teams to collaborate more effectively and spark creativity within the team.

Kanban board is a time saver for both teams and management at the same time. Management can see with a few mouse-clicks what the team members are working on and this means that team members do not need to spend time on administrative tasks (reports in Excel and Word) allowing them to do what they do best, focus on the development task.

Kanban board provides management with a clear overview. They can manage multiple projects at once which are essential today. Management can change priority of work items, move work items from one sprint or release to another or they can simply assign work items to team member trough the Kanban board.

I use a Kanban board on daily basis and in cases of managing projects Kanban board (especially the “filter of the past 7 days” option) I find it gives me a useful overview of my colleagues’ work, their feedback and suggestions. I often use screen sharing with team members to discuss to-dos, and ongoing work issues. When using Kanban board as a team member I enjoy the opportunity to share my thoughts and feedback on team tasks with the aim to move forward with tasks.

Kanban board is great for engagement and to manage workflow efficiently. Check codeBeamer 7.2 to learn more about how our enhanced Agile Planning Board (Kanban board) can support your teams’ creativity and efficiency.
