.

Feeding too many business systems and now ALM as well? Sigh!

Just recently, the Intland crew visited the REConf 2013 in Munich. For those of you who don’t know, this is the annual German, well-visited conference about requirements management.

The keynote by Prof. Dr. Gunter Dueck was about “The Enemies of Innovation”. It is not so much his main topic but a small complaint in this speech which made me think about our Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) product codeBeamer in another way. Mr. Dueck spoke about a wide-spread necessity and the implicit burden to create input in business systems. Because it is neither fun to feed many busineess systems nor do these systems rarely help those people who create the input, nobody is keen on providing timely and accurate information.

First thing I thought was that our new customers might now think about the need to feed codeBeamer being a burden as well and I would hear them sigh loudly. In discussions at our booth I was happy to experience the opposite. I was surprised to hear that users of all industries realize the value of an ALM system as it helps them right away once they have a complex project or a larger team.

Less mature organizations are already happy with avoiding paper when they need parallel access to their documents and work items and when they experience frequent change of dependent artifacts of which they need to keep track and overview. Once they have to be compliant with certain industry standards, even smaller teams value ALM to be useful technology to provide prove and documentation about their work regularly. I was suspicious if these visitors were not already biased as attendees of a requirement conference.

More mature organizations considered ALM to be more than just a practical working style. They would not go as far as calling it a way of life but … kind of. It helps them so much to keep everybody up-to-date of the development process, to be informed about constant change, to realize release visibility, impact analysis and enforce traceability across teams and disciplines to mention just a few of the plenty advantages. And they asked for many details and support of some really complex scenarios I was not always aware of before.

Customers expect from an ALM system to be the place to handle their most complex scenarios around their innovations. Closing the circle and referring to the beginning, I believe that the introduction of ALM itself was an innovation some time ago (at least a smaller one) and it has almost become a commodity though there are still plenty of opportunities to start with ALM. Today, ALM systems certainly help focusing on innovations more than they prevent it.

In software development of any kind, requirements management and testing are critical factors for code quality and project success. Clearly defined requirements significantly reduce the risk of unpleasant surprises later on in the project.
Test that are associated to requirements ensure, that the specifications of the requirements are met and increase the quality of the development output.

Import and define requirements

Create test cases from requirements

Create test sets and test configurations

Create and execute test runs
